Fieldwork Educator Preparation and Continuing Education

Fieldwork Educator Preparation and Continuing Education

All licensed (or otherwise regulated) professionals of occupational therapy (OTs and OTAs) are required to engage in continuing education to promote life long learning for current, ethical practice. Many other healthcare and/other human service providers are required to seek continuing education as well. In addition, according to the accreditation standards by which all OT/OTA programs must abide, Fieldwork Educators must be qualified to supervise OT students and be adequately prepared to serve in this role (ACOTE Standards C.1.8. and C.1.11.).

In today's healthcare environment, human service agencies must comply with numerous federal and other regulatory bodies' requirements, many of which pertain to employee competence for safely performing their assigned duties. Often, proof of compliance is provided by requiring employees to complete annual competencies. Similarly, OT/OTA programs partner with Fieldwork Educators to provide continuing education options to ensure adequate preparation (and qualifications) when supervising fieldwork students.

To support Fieldwork Educators who host students from this program, ASOT recommends the following options for continuing education:
  • Preceptor Education Program (PEP) modules; click this link to view details
    • Estimated time required to complete all modules is approximately 4 to 5 hours
  • ASOT Fieldwork Educator TutorialProfessionals who select this Fieldwork Educator Preparation and Continuing Education option will learn tips and strategies for supervising students of occupational therapy that are specific to ASOTPlease open the attached Tutorial document to begin the ASOT Fieldwork Educator Tutorial.
    • Estimated time required to complete the Tutorial is approximately 1 hour
  • Continuing education courses (in-person, not online) (e.g. AOTA Fieldwork Educators Certificate Workshopetc.)
  • ASOT's Vision in Action Conferences; to be determined; will update and send out information about this soon.
***In order to support ASOT Fieldwork Educators while meeting the ACOTE standards mentioned above, all Level I and Level II Fieldwork Educators will complete a "one-time" form that provides information to Juliet Steffe for identifying experience and needs of the Fieldwork Educator community. Please complete this attached one-time form titled FW Educator Data Form and Statement of Understanding (electronically or by hand) and return to Juliet Steffe via email/mail/fax. If you are within your first year of student supervision, ASOT asks that you complete any of the above preparatory courses prior to supervising students and then return the form provided on the link.***
