About Spalding University

About Spalding University

Spalding University represents a legacy of education established in 1814 by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth (SCN).  In 1829, the legislature of the Commonwealth of Kentucky granted the institution, then known as Nazareth Academy, a broad-ranging charter to confer academic degrees. In 1920, the SCN founded Nazareth College occupying the historic Tompkins-Buchanan-Rankin Mansion at 851 South Fourth Street, Louisville, KY thus establishing the Louisville campus. Since January 1, 1984, the independent liberal arts institution that began as Nazareth Academy near Bardstown, KY has been known as Spalding University, honoring the roots established by Mother Catherine Spalding, founder of the SCN and who is also regarded as the founder of social work in the Louisville area.

Today, this urban, co-educational institution offers more than two dozen degree programs at the bachelor, master, and doctoral levels. Several of Spalding University’s programs and initiatives have enjoyed generous financial support from Kosair Charities which is a nonprofit charitable organization whose mission is to protect the health and wellbeing of children in Kentucky and southern Indiana. Leaders, faculty, and staff continue Spalding University’s mission started by the SCN and Kosair Charities’ mission by meeting the diverse needs of students and the community by providing quality, real-world learning in liberal and professional studies to over 2,400 students.

Spalding University Mission Statement
Spalding University is a diverse community of learners dedicated to meeting the needs of the times in the tradition of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth through quality undergraduate and graduate liberal and professional studies, grounded in spiritual values, with emphasis on service and the promotion of peace and justice.
