This guide is created for department chairs, faculty, and staff working with students needing accommodations.

Screen Capture Tools or Devices

Most of these programs are freeware.  In some cases, users can utilities for a specified period of time or for a specified number of trials for free. Once you have reached the limit, you will need to register the program and pay for a licensed copy in order to continue use.

Camstudio- Camstudio is screen capture software which will record any activity that is occurring on the computer screen. Also synchronizes audio (either via microphone or directly from the computer). Freeware download.

Jing- Jing captures an image of what you see on your computer screen. Simply select any window or region that you want to capture, mark up your screenshot with a text box, arrow, highlight or picture caption, and decide how you want to share it. Limit to 5 minute videos.

Screencast-O-matic-Record on-screen activity for short tutorials, visual presentations, and communicate while you demonstrate! 15 minute maximum for free account. 

Wink- Users can capture screenshots, add explanations boxes, buttons, titles, audio content, etc and then join a number of slides together to create a tutorial or movie. Freeware

Digital Slideshows or Storytelling

Microsoft PhotoStory 3- Create slideshows using your digital photos and images. Crop or rotate pictures, add special effects, titles, captions, soundtracks, and voice narration to images. Can export as small file sizes, ideal for display on portable devices.  

Pearltrees- Users may collect, organize and share a digital library of web pages, photos, or notes. Aside from digital storytelling. Pearltrees may be used for brainstorming.

Voicethread- A collaborative, multimedia slide show that holds images, documents, and videos.  Users may navigate slides and leave comments in 5 ways- voice (with a mic or telephone), text, audio file, or video (via a webcam). VoiceThread can be exported to MP3 players or DVDs to play as archival movies.
