This guide is created for department chairs, faculty, and staff working with students needing accommodations.

Audio Tools and Devices

Most of these programs are freeware.  In some cases, users can utilities for a specified period of time or for a specified number of trials for free. Once you have reached the limit, you will need to register the program and pay for a licensed copy in order to continue use.

Audacity-This tool may be used to record podcasts for either Windows, Mac, OSX, and GNU/Linux users.  Files are saved as MP3 recordings.  One can cut, copy, splice, or mix sounds together.  Useful for recording introductions, welcome activities, or audio feedback.

Audacity Portable- Audacity Portable is the Audacity audio editor packaged as a portable app, so you can take your audio files along with everything you need to edit and record on the go. You can place it on your USB flash drive, iPod, portable hard drive or a CD and use it on any computer.

ChirBit- Chirbit allows you to record using webcam or microphone, or upload audio files.  Each audio file that you upload can be up to 120MB. An Mp3 file recorded at 120MBs would be about 2hrs long. If you record your chirbit via a webcam or microphone you can record for up to 5 minutes. Subscription required.

Media.io-Media.io is an online audio converter.  You may record using your mobile phone and use Media.io to convert it to a MP3 file and upload to your LMS course shell.  Conversion formats include MP3, WAV, OGG, and WMA.

PodOmatic-PodOmatic is a website specialized in the creation of tools and services that enable users to easily find, create, distribute, promote and listen to both audio and video podcasts. Basic accounts are free, but requires registration.  A free account allows 500 MB storage, 15 GB bandwidth/monthly, and the ability to share and join the PodOmatic community. 

Windows Sound Recorder- Sound Recorder is a recording tool preloaded on Windows PCs similar to Audacity.  To access, select your Start button, search on for Sound Recorder in the Search text box.
