Recordings and descriptions of the annual Spalding Retention Summit

2022 Retention Summit

On behalf of the 2022 Retention Summit Planning Committee, we’d like to thank you for participating in the 2nd Annual Retention Summit. If you weren’t able to attend, we are glad you are taking time to view the recording of the Summit.

The 2022 Retention Summit was held on May 13th from 10:00am-3:30pm during which time we explored some of the trends and models that make our jobs an exhilarating way to engage each day and foster student success. We heard from faculty, staff, and students about their experiences, challenges, and successes that work to improve and grow Spalding University.

See below for recording, slides, and more details on each of the sessions offered.

Concurrent Sessions 1

“Retaining Students through Early Intervention, Engagement, and Help Seeking in Online Courses”

Presented by Dr. Laura Detmering and Dr. Bob Johnson

Research suggests that eagerness, engagement, and help-seeking behaviors result in higher completion rates in online classes and retention rates in academic programs. Similarly, early interventions with students can aid in retention efforts. This presentation highlights the value of embedding the Spalding Writing Center services into first-year writing courses and graduate-level business (MSBC) courses at Spalding University. Presenters will demonstrate how the implementation of engaged feedback, early interventions, and easy access contribute to student success.

“Shining a Light on the Murky Middle”

Presented by Dr. Katherine Walker-Payne

Students in the “murky middle” are defined as students who finish their first year of college with a GPA between 2.0 and 3.0 but still have a good chance of leaving the university before they complete their degree. At Spalding, the average GPA for a non-graduate is 2.89. Oftentimes, students who fit this profile don’t raise flags, until they tell us they’re leaving. In this workshop, we will review some strategies currently in place to engage our “murky middle” students. In addition, participants will have a chance to explore data via Navigate to identify a sub-population of students they can prioritize for strategic support and outreach.

“Why do you stay while others go? Student Perspectives on Their Retention”

Facilitated by Dr. Allison From-Tapp

Students share their own stories about their Spalding experience. Although it is important to know why students leave, it is equally vital to understand why others stay. Understanding their lived experience allows more opportunity to build on our strengths through students' eyes.

Concurrent Sessions 2

“Utilizing External Funding to Maximize Student Success”

Presented by Dr. Glenn Baete, Ms. Mary Bainbridge, and Dr. Shannon Cambron

Spalding University has intentionally sought external partnerships and funding sources to assist in the expansion of academic programs and increase the learning experiences of students within and outside the classroom. Hear from program leaders on the strategies they have used to secure these funding options and the impact these experiences have had on student learning and engagement.

Concurrent Sessions 3

Roundtable on Mental Health & Wellbeing to Foster Student Retention

Dr. Allison From-Tapp and Dr. Tomarra Adams

Students continue to feel the effects of surviving COVID, loss, social isolation, and the interruption to how they've been socialized to learning. There continue to be psychological, academic, and social impacts on how the world shifted. This session builds on some of the concepts presented in the EAB session, but does not require viewing to engage in a conversation on how students are recovering and ways the University is responding.

Roundtable on the Issues of Faculty & Staff Retention

Ms. Leah Cover, Dr. Steven Kniffley, and Dr. Patty Spurr

This is the time of the great resignation. Spalding has not escaped the impact of this major employment shift. Leaders from faculty senate and staff advisory council, along with our chief diversity officer, explore the reasons people stay and how we can explore their respective areas to continue to make Spalding a great place to work.

2021 Retention Summit

On behalf of the Retention Summit Planning Committee, we'd like to thank you again for participating in the 1st Annual Retention Summit. If you weren't able to attend, we are glad you are taking time to view the recording of the Summit. The day was filled with amazing presentations from our colleagues across campus as well as EAB who discussed the state of Higher Education in a post-vaccine era as well as a year in review on Navigate.

The day brought idea sharing and conversation about how to use data and create feedback loops to support our students. We are sharing with you the survey to provide feedback to help us continue to make the Summit a successful event. You will find the recordings of the presentations here as well as the slide decks used during the presentations.
